Arcata’s only “shotgun” house was built in 1908 for a Michigan-born prospector named Daniel Lamberson. A common house-type of the South, the shotgun form is on room wide and takes its name from the fact that a bullet fired from the front door would exit through the rear. The one-story house has a bracket-decorated entrance stoop and a characteristic pyramidal roof. Shotgun houses were introduced into this country by free Haitian blacks in the second quarter of the 19th century. It is unmistakable because of its narrow facade and extreme length, a configuration produced by the front to rear arrangement of a single file of rooms.
