Another upright-and-wing house, also moved from 11th and D Streets during freeway expansion, the Cates House was built in 1884 by Sewell Cates, a native of Maine. Unlike its neighbor, this house has a single entrance into the wing, but instead of the traditional porch, there is only a stoop, decorated with cutout brackets. A basic classic-form house of cornice returns, wide frieze band and corner boards, the Cates house is a somewhat fancier version of this settlement architecture, having decorative brackets applied to frieze, porch and window shelves.
