An unusual house even for transitional Arcata, this house was built for John Pafso by Nelson Johansen in 1906. A front-gable form with gabled side-roof dormers, the house has a corner recessed entry, frieze band and corner boards. Although recently enclosed, the porch fortunately retains is symbolic sawn ornamentation applied to the top edges and an exciting cutout railing. The cutout ornament in the gables seem like a late Gothic Revival application. These uncommon ornamental expressions create a noteworthy architecture in this turn-of-the-century house.
