Arcata Contractor Nelson B. Johansen built this Craftsman-style bungalow of gable-roof form, extended eaves with exposed rafter ends, gable shingles, triangular brackets and gable stickwork truss for Cosmo Stiglich in 1915. A native of Austria, Stiglich came to Humboldt County in the late 1800s, where he became part of a growing, East Arcata population of immigrants from Austria, Hungary and Yugoslavia. Most of these men found work in local mills or in the woods, eventually organizing themselves into a National Croatian Society for mutual support and social activity. Descendants of several of those families still live in East Arcata.
