In 1914 local carpenters transformed a classic-style, front-gable house of the 1870s into a “modern” Craftsman house.
To look at the new residence now occupied by Bert Hill and family on Ninth Street east of “D,” one would never suppose that it was a portion of the old residence, which formerly stood upon the same lot. The house has been made into a large modern bungalow and is architecturally most pleasing to the eye… (Arcata Union, April 16, 1914)
Typical features of that time include the gabled roofline, shed dormer, wide eaves with exposed rafter ends, artistic upper-sash window divisions, stick braces in the gable ends and wide veranda supported by square posts on wall piers.
